What / Who is an Orthotist?

An orthotist is a healthcare professional who makes and fits braces and splints (orthoses) for people who need added support for body parts that have been weakened by injury, disease, or disorders of the nerves, muscles, or bones. They work under a doctor's orders to adapt purchased braces or create custom-designed braces.

Amputees:

A brand new amputee must contact their physician and get approval to be fitted with a prosthesis and obtain a prescription for a new prosthesis.

Orthotics:

Patients needing an orthotic device will also need to obtain a prescription from their physician as well as a letter of medical necessity describing why the orthotic device is needed and what it will be used for.
